Award season is officially here! It all began last night with the 69th Golden Globe Awards, which took place in—where else—Hollywood! If you missed it, don't worry. I watched the entire thing from red carpet to credits (but missed the stunning Emily Blunt in a gorgeous golden dress during my one and only bathroom break).
Here's my recount of the first big award show of 2012!
Congrats to Our Fav Shows and Actors/Actresses:
One of my favourite reasons for watching award shows is not only seeing wins from my personal favourite films, series, actors and actresses, but also seeing wins from those movies and shows we've been promoting all year long (but the two are usually the same!)
It's exciting that two of four Best TV Actress categories went to HBO series. The hilarious Laura Dern takes it home for Best Performance in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Enlightened, while Kate Winslet wins the Globe for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film as Mildred Pierce. The win by Kate should be of no surprise though, since she had picked up the Primetime Emmy for the same role. Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, also picks up an award for Best Supporting Performance in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film. Game of Thrones returns in April, and we just cannot wait for more!
Special congrats go to Matt LeBlanc for Episodes, one of my favourite series of 2011. Yes, Matt plays "himself," but it's a version of himself that I'm sure he is nothing truly like. I was never a Friends fan, so I can't compare Joey to Matt, but if you haven't watched the series, watch it on Movie Central On Demand now!
Red Carpet Best-Dressed:
For the ladies, atop the best-dressed list is actually not an actress but Miss Golden Globe 2012, Rainey Qualley, the daughter of Andie Macdowell. Angelina Jolie looked smashing with perfect red lips (and am I the only one who doesn't think she looked too skinny?), Kate Winslet was elegant in a black and white dress, accessorized with a waist belt, Natalie Portman looked fantastic post-baby in a fuchsia number, and Michelle Williams looked down-to-earth as always. Sarah Hyland also looked classy and fantastic (I need to find out who her stylist is), and who can forget Evan Rachel Wood's feather dress? As for the men, some of the finest looking actors included Ewan McGregor (my personal favourite), Robert Downey Jr., George Clooney, and Matt LeBlanc. Sorry, Adam Levine, I did not dig your oversized bow-tie!
The Return of Ricky Gervais:
I'm a big Ricky Gervais fan. We're all big fans here at Movie Central and HBO Canada. When I found out he'd return as host, two things crossed my mind: 1) I'm so glad he's back! I hope they let him say all the cruel jokes he wants all night long; 2) There's no way they'd let him get away with all the crude humour his twisted (but brilliant) mind can conjure. At last night's Golden Globes, there just simply wasn't enough Ricky. Maybe they were running out of time, or maybe they were afraid of what he'd say and kept him in a closet. Whatever the reason for the lack of Gervais, I, and many others like me according to the tweets on my Twitter feed, were left dissatisfied with the case of the missing host. For the amount of time he had, the jokes were decent but a little predictable. Surprisingly, the best joke of the night unexpectedly goes to George Clooney. The joke is a little..."graphic," shall I say. I suggest you to Google it, because I am not typing that out!
