Happy Groundhog Day everyone but more importantly Happy Oscar Nominations Day!

As the nominations for the Oscars were announced this morning, it was no surprise that Canadian James Cameron and Avatar received several nods including Best Director and Best Picture.  Other nominations in the Best Picture category include District 9, The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds, which will all be coming to Movie Central in the spring.

Morgan Freeman was nominated for his role in the drama Invictus, but to see a lighter side of Freeman, check out his comedy The Bucket List airing on Movie Central on February 25 at 12:30 pm MT and 11:30 pm MT.

Sandra Bullock racks up two nominations this week – one for Actress in a Leading Role in The Blind Side, but also for a Razzie’s Worst Actress for All About Steve. Lucky girl!

Bullock’s competition in leading actress category is Meryl Streep for her role in Julie and Julia, which comes to Movie Central on March 27 at 9:00 pm MT.  In the meantime, you can catch Streep in Mamma Mia (Feb. 5 and 19) and Doubt airing throughout the month of March.

In the Animated Feature Film category, Coraline was nominated.  It’s the story of a young girl who discovers a secret door in her house leading to a seemingly perfect world.  Movie Central will be premiering Coraline on Sunday, February 21 at 6:30 pm MT, and throughout the month of March.

The Cove and Food. Inc are two documentaries that were nominated in the Best Documentary (Feature) category.  Both are coming to Movie Central in the spring as well.  I highly recommend The Cove, which is a very shocking and frank look at the slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

In the Documentary (Short Subject) category, two documentaries currently airing on HBO Canada were nominated – Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant and China’s Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province.  Last Truck will be airing on February 25 at 5:45 am MT and 4:05 pm MT, as well as several airings in March.  China’s Unnatural Disaster will air on March 4.

Winners will be announced at this year’s ceremony on March 7.
