Does Movie Central air programming in HD? ?

Why are some movies shown in 4:3 aspect ratio rather than the original widescreen format?
As a premium pay television channel, Movie Central is committed to providing a superior viewing experience for our subscribers. It is not uncommon to have different aspect ratios and types of scans used for different purposes (i.e. Cinescope 2.35:1 for theatrical release, 1.77:1 for HD release, 1.33:1 for TV release, etc.)
We always endeavour to present movies the way they were intended to be shown and will continue to do so. However we are always subject to the format in which the film is distributed. Many distributors re-edit in a "pan and scan" format in an attempt to include as much of the original image as possible in order to show widescreen films on a traditional 4 X 3 television and this is the only format we receive for broadcast.
Aspect Ratio for HD
We are committed to offering viewers an optimal viewing experience but are subject to the available technology and practices. The widest picture we can offer based on current standard distribution practices would be a 1.85:1 print of a movie, however, this would render part of the HDTV display in black in order to letterbox the image and keep the subject matter undistorted. Currently, a movie studio’s distribution department would not provide a print wider than a 1.85:1 to broadcasters even when the original title was produced in 2.35:1 for cinema distribution. In using the 1.77:1 print, we try to provide the most of the 1920x1080 picture resolution that is available in HDTV.

What is HDTV?
High Definition Television, or HDTV, delivers brilliant, high-resolution images in a wide-screen 16 x 9 format. The images have over 5 times the sharpness compared to standard definition television (SDTV). HDTV signals have either 1080 lines interlaced or 720 lines progressive scan (compared to 480 lines interlaced for SDTV). One key difference between HDTV and analog TV is that the signal is delivered digitally, assuring perfect images on the screen. HDTV most often includes Dolby Digital® coding to provide the capability for full surround sound through 5.1 channels.
How much programming is currently available in HD?
Currently, Movie Central airs an impressive amount of true HD programming and our schedule continues to grow as more studios produce and make available HD movies and series.
