Characters
Hank
Life has been a rocky road of ups and downs for famed novelist and NYC transplant Hank Moody since he relocated to Los Angeles. He suffered through a terrible case of writer’s block, a crappy Hollywood adaptation of his prized tome, the death of the rock star whose memoirs he was writing, and a single, tumultuous term as college professor, where the temptations of faculty, students and the dean’s wife proved too much for him. But when the truth comes out that he is the real author of former underage flame Mia’s scandalous book, it not only upends his home life, it lands him in jail. It may sound desperate, but Hank enjoys his life and owns all his vices – drink, drugs and women – with a refreshing sense of honesty and unapologetic candor. He’s holding it together while falling apart, and he doesn’t mind one bit. Played by David Duchovny.
Karen
Karen is Hank’s long time, on-again/off-again girlfriend and the mother of his teenage daughter. The talented architect has come close to cutting her ties with Hank for good more than once, she even made it all the way to the altar. But in the end, the desire to keep her family together, and her undeniable love for Hank keep her coming back for more. But now that Hank’s latest transgression with Mia has been revealed, Karen’s loyalty to Hank is put to its biggest test yet. Played by Natascha McElhone.
Marcy
Marcy Runkle is a woman who never minces words. She’s a brash, hard core, unapologetic salon owner currently in the middle of a divorce from Hank’s agent/best friend, Charlie. She’s also Karen’s best friend. She and Charlie are still sharing their jointly-owned house, and she is none-too-pleased when Charlie invites Hank to stay with them after Karen throws Hank out. Played by Pamela Adlon.
Becca
The women may come and go, but Hank’s heart truly belongs to his daughter. Hank and Karen’s quick-witted teenager has seen it all – watching her parents’ complicated relationship, as well as her father’s roller-coaster lifestyle. She is wise beyond her years. But Hank is in the big-time doghouse with Becca right now, and her burgeoning interest in music and the possibility of joining a band will challenge Hank’s sway over her more than ever. Played by Madeleine Martin.
Charlie
Hank’s best friend and agent once lived life on the straight and narrow path. But it all blew up in his face when an affair with a receptionist earned him a pink slip, and further career missteps and sexual transgressions have resulted in a pending divorce from Marcy and an uncertain future. But now that his star client Hank is hot again, Charlie’s professional future is brightening – assuming he can coax the movie version of Hank’s latest book to fruition. Played by Evan Handler.
